5 Years of Open the Book
September 2010 marked the fifth anniversary of Open the Book in the Otley Deanery. Launched in 2005 in the parish of Burley in Wharfedale, others soon joined the project. Today, all 11 parishes in the Deanery have a storytelling team going into 14 local primary schools on a regular basis.
The schools’ celebration week involved every school we have links with. Eleven schools sent a representative class to one of three celebrations held in local churches. Bob Hartman, author of the Lion Storyteller Bible was our guest for the week, and involved the children in re-telling some of the Bible stories. Huge banners made by the props team were displayed, showing the different books in the Bible. Props from some of the stories were shown, and the story located in it’s Biblical context.
For those schools which were unable to travel to a venue, Bob made visits to the schools, and gave an hours’ performance of Bible and folk stories.
The week rounded off with an entertaining ‘Audience with Bob Hartman’ which gave a wider audience the opportunity to see Bob perform some of his work.
The work of the storytelling teams continues – but it has been a good opportunity to thank God for the work of Open the Book, and look forward to it’s ongoing success.
